Jack White’s Triple Decker Vinyl Invention

Jack White continues to stoke the fires of the public’s renewed fascination with vinyl, with the announcement that The Dead Weather‘s new single Blue Blood Blues will be issued as a Triple Decker Record.

What the hell is a Triple Decker Record, you ask? Designed and trademarked by White and assembled by United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN, the unique vinyl pressing is the 12″ version of the single with a previously unreleased 7″ vinyl embedded within, which can only be listened to once removed from inside the larger record.

“It’s one of the many mind games we like to play with you here at Third Man Records,” White says in a video about the release, which you can watch below. “You will require a Swiss army knife or a screwdriver,” he explains, a possible first in the world of vinyl.

Also issued as a 7-inch single with a double cover and on a tri-colour vinyl featuring the B-side Jawbreaker (live), the limited edition Triple Decker Record is limited to 300 copies. The 12″ version will come with alternate B-sides No Hassle Night / I Just Want to Make Love to You (live).

Available on Friday (September 17), 100 copies will be sold directly in the Third Man Records store in Nashville, with the other 200 being distributed through selected record shops and randomly via mail order.

Gotta love a good marketing gimmick to rake in as many dollars as possible from the devoted fans.

Yeah, those evil moneygrubbing whores. I think the last limited edition vinyl single was all of $7.99. Can’t believe their nerve.

Jack has gone on record over and fucking over about how he hates the various ways the record companies squeeze cash out of us. About 95% of everything he has his fingerprints on is very accessible, and the more limited stuff can be sold for many times what you paid for it.
Looks like a gimmick to me thats for sure

In order to listen to something they have to possibly break the surrounding record? CRAZY.

God forbid an artist gets creative to sell stuff in this day and age when music is available for free on the Internet. Apparently fandom is no longer good enough, now they want money.

I know Jack White is Jesus Christ on this site, but really. If Linkin Park pulled this shit the opinions would be drastically different. Selling music is great, but this triple decker record shit is a gimmick. It doesn’t enhance the listening experience in any way, and it doesn’t add any additional content. If fans like it, cool, but that’s what it is.

it may be a gimmick, but that’s still a load of bullshit. if linkin park had their own vinyl record factory and were making crazy shit never seen before, we’d respect that. if they hired some kind of outside party to come up with it / make it for them, then we might have a wisecrack or two about them being lazy about it, but jack gets a lot of respect around here for being an obsessively productive musician that obviously cares to do more for the institution of recorded music than just provide listening experiences.

The listening experience is enhanced simply by the fact that it is on a vinyl record. And the hidden 7″ contains a unreleased song. Listen at the 53rd second if you dont believe me, Jack says it himself.
Jack gets respect around here because this is a haven for good music. He busts his ass and doesnt rest on his laurels, unlike Linkin Park.
