Fans of Björk have been expecting new music from the Icelandic singer for quite a while now. Her last album, Volta, came out almost 4 years ago, and the last time we’d heard any news regarding a new release was a vague promise in an interview last year. However, we’ve recently learned that her next project is entitled Biophilia, an ambitious science-fiction musical directed by Michel Gondry, and it will be presented in a rather unusual manner.
As Consequence of Sound reports, the album is “a multi-media project encompassing music, apps, internet, installations and live shows”. Given that Biophilia was partially created on an iPad, it’s appropriate that its first piece of music was revealed through an iPad app: Solar System, an e-book containing “more than 150 beautifully presented story pages lavishly illustrated with interactive scenes, videos and 3D objects,” all accompanied by this original Björk track:
In addition to that, it was recently announced that the Biophilia live concert will premiere with a 6-days residency at the Campfield Market Hall, in Manchester, UK, starting this June. According to the press release, the gigs are said to include “a bespoke digitally-controlled pipe organ; a 30 foot pendulum that harnesses the earth’s gravitational pull to create musical patterns – creating a unique bridge between the ancient and the modern; a bespoke gamelan-celeste hybrid; and a one-off extraordinary pin barrel harp”. According to Dazed, people outside of the UK need not to worry, as the Biophilia shows will come to other major cities in the world afterwards, so we can definitely expect some dates in the US.
A proper release date for the LP hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s likely to happen soon, with her upcoming Summer tour kicking off in the near future.
