‘Achtung Baby’ Covers Album Artists Unveiled: Hear Jack White’s Contribution

U2, Music

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic album Achtung Baby, U2 have promised, among other releases, a compilation of cover versions of all the songs on the record. The CD, entitled AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered, is set to come bundled with Q Magazine’s 25th anniversary issue, on October 26.

Hear Jack White’s take on Love Is Blindness below, courtesy of Consequence Of Sound. Fear not, for it is quite electric, and does feature a guitar solo.

The full tracklisting of the album, which is being referred to by Q as “The Best Ever Free CD,” was just revealed:

1. Nine Inch Nails – Zoo Station
2. U2 (Jacques Lu Cont Mix) – Even Better Than The Real Thing
3. Damien Rice – One
4. Patti Smith – Until The End Of The World
5. Garbage – Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
6. Depeche Mode – So Cruel
7. Snow Patrol – Mysterious Ways
8. The Fray – Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World
9. Gavin Friday – The Fly
10. The Killers – Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
11. Glasvegas – Acrobat
12. Jack White – Love Is Blindness

Even though this kind of release can be mostly terrible, the lineup on this particular case looks quite promising, and the pairings of artist and song are cohesive enough. It’s odd to see that U2′s opening acts Snow Patrol and The Fray made the cut, yet Muse, who got all friendly with the band, and occasionally performed bits of The Fly onstage, didn’t. The inclusion of Nine Inch Nails, while certainly exciting, isn’t that odd when you consider that Trent Reznor recently covered Immigrant Song.

U2′s frontman Bono stated about the covers CD: “It’s strange, because when I hear the album, when U2 do it, all I hear is what’s wrong with it. But when I heard all these artists doing it, I thought, ‘It’s really good.” The cover of the magazine adds the necessary, hyperbolic quote: “Some of these versions are better than our own!”

Obviously, we’re curious to see how well that quote applies to reality. The magazine will be on stands on October 26th, but you can preorder it here.

  6. ZombieStardust says:

The fact that the tracklisting states “Nine Inch Nails” instead of “Trent Reznor” can only mean good things for the future, right? As in, Trent is still using the name so he hasn’t completely put them aside while working on other things…
