It’s so marvelous that John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1971 song, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), is now regarded as a modern-day Christmas carol. It’s optimistic with a beautiful message of hope and love and harmony, and it is so fitting that Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples, and Sean Lennon chose this track to close off The Colbert Report’s 2012 season last night.
Watch below as the three musicians, backed by the Harlem Gospel Choir, sing a splendid rendition of the song, carrying on John and Yoko’s message of peace and hope and better days.
“Yoko and I wrote [it] together,” Lennon remarked about the song in 1980. “It says, ‘War is over if you want it.’ It was still that same message – the idea that we’re just as responsible as the man who pushes the button. As long as people imagine that somebody’s doing it to them, and that they have no control, then they have no control.”
Our thanks, as always, to TheAudioPerv for the great video.
