Portishead has been silent since the release of Chase The Tear and vocalist Beth Gibbons has promised the unleashing of her second solo album since 2013. Gonga is an instrumental, heavy rock trio hailing from the UK who have the distinction of once being signed to Geoff Barrow’s label. While all of this seems a bit random, Beth Gibbons and Gonga have teamed up for a very cool cover of Black Sabbath’s self-titled classic song, and named it Black Sabbeth.
Black Sabbath isn’t exactly the first band that comes to mind when thinking of Portishead’s dreamy trip-hop psych drone. But take away the record scratching and add Gonga’s sludgy guitars and you get a delectable mix of doom ‘n drone. The cover itself does not stray far from the original musically, Gonga keeps everything nice ‘n steady. But much like the lead in a horror movie going upstairs instead of out the front door, Beth’s voice creeps around the edges like a specter, taking your hand and leading you deeper into the darkness. She sounds simultaneously like a scary ghost child spirit and the witch responsible for conjuring the scary ghost child spirit.
Check out the official video, which is a great throwback to old horror flicks that also totally looks like the Black Sabbath album cover.
Get yer doom on. Good luck hunting down one of these Record Store Day releases.
