Lord knows I’m not a big fan of hippies, but for every generally lame subculture has its exceptional freaks, and I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve always dug the John Butler Trio. Butler is just such a ridiculously talented player, and he’s got a soulful voice that elevates him above not just the useless burnouts that do cheap versions of what he does, but also most of the Birkenstocked jam band-ers, and John Mayer’s douche-blues.
I just stumbled upon this video of him performing Pharrell Williams’ Happy for Triple J’s Like A Version, wandering around after clicking a link to this video of Arctic Monkeys doing Tame Impala’s Feels Like We Only Go Backwards. Another good performance from a great band, but Butler’s set edged it out on the scoreboard of impressed smirks.
Feel free to go exploring on Triple J’s YouTube Channel, but be warned that most of these sessions go kind of like this, in that they’re kind of better on paper, before you realize most buzzbands are already stretching their schtick a bit thin.
