We here at Antiquiet have felt that it would be a good idea not to bombard you with every Foo Fighters update coming from the release of their 8th album Sonic Highways because we all know this band likes to slowly release their goods, but not today. Today the five piece gave fans every thing they wanted to know outside of tour dates.
We learned this spring that Dave Grohl had been developing a new show for HBO. In it, the frontman would travel to various music cities throughout the country with his band and produce eight one-episode documentaries in the style of his own Sound City film. The Foo Fighters would also create an album to accompany the project to serve as their eighth studio release. We were given a short trailer soon after, as well as various teasing photos and hints on the band’s social media sites, but no real information has come until now.
In true Foo fashion, the band concocted an even shorter video showing Grohl receiving a tattoo from Kat Von D with new music to accompany it. He chose what appears to be new lyrics to inscribe around the symbol of this new album: an infinity sign – though some argue it is the number eight, both for the band’s eighth album and because they will pay homage to eight historic music cities.
“In the end we all come from what’s come before” the tattoo reads; it will be interesting to hear what city inspired that line. Check the video out below:
That is not all the Foos gave fans this morning, however, the clip also came with a release date. Sonic Highways the show has been announced to premier on HBO on October 17th while Sonic Highways the album will hit shelves on November 10th. If you feel the itch to pick up the collection of eight songs, you have a wide variety of packaging options to choose from. As usual, you can take your pick between CD or vinyl, and throw in a t-shirt, but now you have the option to grab a wall flag and even a puzzle. The band has also given fans the choice to pick their album cover upon purchase. You can select a cover from any of the eight cities – Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, New Orleans, Seattle, or Washington D.C. – or choose their ‘infinity’ cover.
And while you’re looking through all of the bundles, you will have a chance to see the album’s track list, which you can also see below. There was speculation as to whether or not the album would have only eight songs or if the band would expand, but it does appear they have kept it to eight. Though Grohl has been reported saying this is their lengthiest album to date so don’t get too sad yet.
1. Something From Nothing
2. The Feast and The Famine
4. What Did I Do?/God As My Witness
6. In The Clear
8. I Am A River
All of this news comes in light of two major events in Grohl’s life. Earlier this week it was reported that his father James had passed away from an existing illness. Just a day later, more news surfaced that Dave and his wife Jordyn welcomed their third daughter, Ophelia, into this world. If there is anything known about the guy, it’s that life changes like these only fuel his fire. It is almost certain that the Sonic Highways pin in the band’s roadmap is going to be a big one.
