Through all of SXSW last month, Johnny kept playing this damn song. We’d struggled to “get” the Kendrick Lamar hype, but this new album and this song in particular seemed to have cracked it for him, and by the end of the trip, I had fallen in like with King Kunta, and copped To Pimp A Butterfly on my way back home.
I can’t help but feel like I like the song less after seeing this video though. For all the talk about how Kendrick is supposedly Hip Hop’s newest, biggest, capital-A Artist, the next Kanye, and all of that, here’s the most cliché, done-before video imaginable. Starring Compton of course, as “the ‘hood,” despite it a pretty good neighborhood these days. I don’t know how anyone can put non-statements like this up against envelope-pushers like Run The Jewels, at least not in the same creative categories.
