With their new song Live to Rise attached to The Avengers (officially America’s biggest opening weekend ever), Soundgarden has been getting a lot of extra exposure recently. Frontman Chris Cornell took advantage of this, by providing some exciting news on the group’s upcoming new album.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Cornell didn’t seem to have any hesitation while stating: “[The new record]’s done. It’ll be out in probably October. I would say September but I’m just guessing October. We’re pretty much done with everything.” Adding that the LP is to be mastered in a week’s time, the release window mentioned sounds solid enough.
Cornell also mentioned that Live to Rise was actually the last track written during their recording sessions for the album, and that it was purposefully made to sound different from their usual sound: “It felt like this should be a little more straightforward ’cause it’s for a broad audience. The idea of having it be intelligent lyrically and melodic and all these things – it’s a task to do all that stuff. Once I got started I wanted it to be right.” Lastly, he added that the movie’s soundtrack was a great way to get some attention for the band: “It’s a pretty good way to have a partner in the entertainment business to get your songs out in front of people. The record companies don’t have that any more. They don’t have the money. They don’t have the resources. They can’t do it. They won’t do it. Not gonna happen.”
While Soundgarden’s October-bound new record remains untitled, their Classic Albums Selection box set will be released in Europe later this month, coinciding with the band’s tour through the continent.
