I’m a sucker for 12-string guitars. With gorgeous harmonic textures filling in high and mid frequencies, it’s almost impossible to make an ugly sound on a well-made 12-string. Fender sent over one of their redesigned CD-140SCE 12-string electric acoustics last month, and with a surprising depth of rich resonance it might be the most playable guitar of its kind that I’ve ever laid my hands on.
Generally with guitars, you get what you pay for – and 12-strings worth their weight in dead trees are rarely on the low end of $500. But Fender is no slouch with this one, and with a retail tag of $399.99 they hit the Goldilocks zone on form and function. With time, it feels as if it begins to breathe and expand in sound the more it’s played.
Fender made the 140SCE with beginners in mind, featuring an accessible Venetian-cutaway body for easy upper-fret access, with a solid spruce top meeting elegant rosewood back and sides, and a tortoiseshell pickguard. The updated model also features rolled fingerboard edges and new neck shape for ease of play. It’s equipped with a Fishman Presys preamp built in, flush with features and a tuner. This little rocker is ideal if you’re looking for a high-quality, affordable guitar with beautiful tone.
Fender also sent over one of their newly designed acoustic amps to accompany. The Acoustic 200 amplifier delivers full, natural tone for acoustic-electric guitar and microphone, with a suite of effects onboard. The specially designed wood shell is a classy vintage design big on simplicity, with two channels designed for instrument or microphone use. It features Bluetooth wireless streaming, an integrated handle, with universal voltage for international use.
Together, the guitar + amp deliver a bright, cleanly complex voice that delivers consistently, from rhythmic intensity to delicate arpeggio fingerwork. The Classic Design series is Fender’s noble effort to deliver entry-level capabilities to guitars a seasoned strummer would reach for. They’ve succeeded wholly, with excellent playability and an accessible price point ideal for introducing first-time and aspiring players to a high-quality acoustic product experience and the trusted Fender brand.
