Rockstar Energy Drink’s annual Mayhem Festival has been running across amphitheaters throughout America for the last month or so, and the tour found itself in Oklahoma City on Thursday night on the last leg of the trek.
With the 2014 edition of the festival featuring headline performances by Avenged Sevenfold and Korn, Rockstar’s all-day event found music fans coming to OKC’s Downtown Airpark in huge numbers. Braving intense 100+ temperatures, more than 10,000 people watched sets by everyone from Mushroomhead, Ill Nino and Suicide Silence to Cannibal Corpse, Asking Alexandria and Body Count (yes, with Ice T). While you’d struggle to find a music fan who enjoyed everything on the bill, chances are there was something for just about any fan of rock music.
Korn put on one of the best sets of the night from a musical standpoint, while the stage theatrics of Avenged Sevenfold easily got the loudest and most intense reaction from the crowd from the entire day’s worth of performances. The two headliners each played relatively short sets of about 12 songs (give or take one) but made the most of the time they had been allotted. There was a lot of internet hate for this lineup when it was announced, but if people turn out in such huge numbers in a secondary market like Oklahoma City, it’s clear the festival organizers know how to get people out into the summer heat.
