As David Bowie seems to have retired his musical career for good, a few unreleased recordings of his are slowly starting to show up – earlier this year, his scrapped album Toy found its way onto the internet. Now, a seemingly-lost performance of Bowie on classic UK show Top Of The Pops, during his Alladin Sane era, has been uncovered.
As Spin reports, the footage of Bowie (and his Spiders From Mars band) playing an extended version of Jean Genie was recorded on January 3, 1973 for the BBC, and only aired once, having the tapes later erased for re-utilization. Fortunately, cameraman John Henshall kept a copy of the video for himself, as he explained on an interview to BBC Radio 2, and was later informed by Bowie fans of how rare the material was. The footage was finally recovered, and aired on the Top Of The Pops Christmas Special this week. Watch it below:
In other David Bowie-related news, the rumors of a musical based on his work were, (thankfully) false.
