Massive Attack released their new EP Ritual Spirit today, and I can’t recommend it enough. It may only be four tracks, and only one features 3D (though it also features Tricky, back for the first time since 1994), but Robert Del Naja, Euan Dickinson, and the collection of collaborators they assembled have managed to revitalize the massively influential trip-hop pioneers’ classic sound with new electricity even more effectively than much of 2010’s Heligoland.
There will be another EP out this spring, written and co-produced by co-founder Daddy G, and then a full-length album later this year. In the meantime, Ritual Spirit has us very excited for the return of Massive Attack in 2016.
You can stream Ritual Spirit on Spotify, buy it on iTunes, or order the double LP on vinyl through the official store. And here’s the video for that track with 3D and Tricky, Take It There, which revisits the band’s 90s sound a bit more directly than the other three tracks, which feature Roots Manuva, Azekel, as well Young Fathers, who the band will be touring with.
