Well this is something different. Mike Doughty, of Soul Coughing notoriety and also respectable solo fame, has randomly posted to Soundcloud three vocal tracks he got from tortured soul Elliott Smith in 1998. The beats he finished/added this year were apparently exactly what was originally envisioned:
In 1998, Elliott recorded some a-cappella vocals for me, specifically to sample and slice-and-dice over beats. They sat on a cassette for 16 years. I just dug it out and completed our collaboration. To be totally clear – this kind of track is exactly what he and I intended to make.
The tracks are attributed to Doughty’s UUL alter-ego, and they’re… well, they’re pretty weird. The tracks sound sort of like Postal Service and Stevie Nicks and bad Euro EDM were all thrown into a blender together. But from a 90s historical standpoint, the fact that this happened in and of itself, let alone can now be heard, is worth mentioning.
By the way… Don’t miss Doughty’s very special Antiquiet Session, in which he performed Soul Coughing songs in our intimate studio.
