America is only just getting to know London-based outfit Various Cruelties, after a tour through NYC & LA and surrounding areas earlier this year, as well as some inescapable ad placement on TV recently. We discovered their debut album in time to catch their excellent performance at the Bootleg Theater. Shortly after, we invited them down to Swing House for an Antiquiet Session, right as an appearance on The Tonight Show was booked. It seems that we’ll soon be sharing our discovery with the rest of the nation.
Various Cruelties’ poppy, crooning album came into our hands right in between the latest from Clutch and The Bronx. So it was something way outside of our usual jurisdiction, genre-wise, right up against brand new music from two of the heaviest AQ obsessions. And yet, the undeniable quality of sound and songwriting still managed to hold our attention. We trusted our instinct and locked them in for this next Antiquiet Sessions installment, and by the time they walked out of Swing House, we knew our gut feeling had rung true.
We proudly present Antiquiet Session #8, with Various Cruelties, beginning with what we consider to be the definitive recording of non-album track F.E.A.R.:
