MC5. The Stooges. Jack White. Eminem. Electric Six. Detroit’s reputation for grinding out powerful artists is well established. We’ve introduced its latest export Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas a few different ways now, but we’re hardly ever satisfied we’ve done an exciting new artist justice until we’ve gotten them into our studio at Swing House for an Antiquiet Session. Shot less than a week ago, this will be the last session done at the Hollywood location before Swing House moves to its grand new space in Atwater.
We haven’t been shy about our love for this new discovery, who will either be the next big semi-retro thing a la Fitz & The Tantrums, or another band passionately loved by not enough people. Hopefully it’s the former, and just a matter of time before Ellen is shaking her square ass to this merry band of misfits on network television. That said, this flawless performances of six songs all done in single takes should help ensure the latter scenario is the worst case.
Most of these songs are from Jessica’s debut album Secret Evil, though there’s an energy that comes out of the band’s live chemistry that we’re proud to add to the picture. Picture Me With You is one exception, which appeared on last year’s Demons EP. It didn’t blow my skirt up when it first came out, but it’s since evolved into a favorite. The other exception is a very special cover we couldn’t be more thrilled to debut right here today, a blistering new ownership of Le Tigre’s Deceptacon. Yeah, with a trombone.
Fuckin’ A, right? If we’ve finally gotten through to you, Secret Evil is available for streaming in full via the band’s official YouTube channel, and you can get it anywhere you get music. If we haven’t, then you didn’t read this far so… Hey, your Mom.
All things Jessica Hernandez related can be found at jessicahernandez.net including tour dates that take her from San Francisco to Pennsylvania through October & November with St. Paul & The Broken Bones. And of course we’ll continue to keep tabs on the band here.
