Our art crush on Mahsa Zargaran started back in 2011. We organized a big SXSW showcase on two stages as part of the biggest and baddest music blog Voltron ever to form, alongside Consequence Of Sound and the Rock It Out! Blog, Some Kind Of Awesome, and TwentyFour Bit. One of our own picks for the first half of the event was Sabrosa Purr, a great LA band that we had been stalking for even longer. It was Mahsa that hopped up behind the kit with them that day and tore open the party. Over the years to follow, she’d periodically float through our radars, like her spirit animal jellyfish. We started to realize just how talented a multi-instrumentalist she is when she started playing her own songs as Omniflux, for awhile with Arden Fisher of Dekades, then completely solo. Recently, she was discovered by Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer, and brought on board for their new album Money Shot, and into the current touring lineup, playing, well, a little bit of everything.
If you don’t know her from Puscifer, and missed the plugs here, you may have caught her DJ’ing during commercial breaks of TBS’ new show Angie Tribeca over the weekend. That’s a show, right? We’re not sure. Mahsa’s projects tend not to fit neatly inside any sort of boxes. Omniflux is no exception. Hence this little pet project we’re finally unveiling: Back in August, we filmed a guerilla Antiquiet Session at Mahsa’s rehearsal space downtown. Wade into the warm water for this 28th installment of our intimate sessions, and into Mahsa’s world of audio and MIDI-controlled visuals.
Foma and Iris Van Herpen have so far only been heard by those lucky enough to catch at least one of her small underground shows in or around Los Angeles, but both will be released soon as part of an EP (or perhaps more?) that Mahsa has reportedly been cooking up. The next two tracks, you may have heard; Lawless Flawless was released on Omniflux’ Bandcamp page. We’re guessing you’re well familiar with the song Icky Thump, though surely you’ve never heard it quite like this…
While we await details of Omniflux’ release, you can catch Mahsa on tour with Puscifer. “Round 2” of their Money Shot tour kicks off on March 17th in Riverside, and from there they’ll head through the Midwest all the way to the East Coast. All those dates are here. And be sure to tabs on Mahsa through omnifluxmusic.com or her Facebook, because if we know Mahsa, we know she’s just going to continue to get up to all kinds of cool shit.
