Earlier this year, we shared our discovery of Dead Heavens. This new blues rock / post-hardcore crossover band is a perfect example of a certain sort that we exist primarily to support; They don’t have some giant marketing machine behind them. The members, while massively respected within certain niches of the rock n’ roll landscape, are not quite household names. You might very well miss them if you had no other friends with good taste and ears to the ground. Well, we refuse to let that happen, because they’re the real deal.
Based in NYC, with a name inspired by a certain early-70s cult satire, Dead Heavens features one of our biggest heroes front and center, Walter Schreifels of Quicksand, Rival Schools, Gorilla Biscuits, Vanishing Life, etc., etc. On bass is Nathan Aguilar of Cults. On drums is Drew Thomas from the Youth Crew hardcore scene. On guitar is Paul Kostabi, an early member of White Zombie (and, trivially, brother to Use Your Illusion album cover artist Mark Kostabi). When the guys came through LA last month to play the Hi Hat in Highland Park, they made a productive pit stop into our Swing House HQ.
While Anthrax shot their Blood Eagle Wings video in the next room, Dead Heavens recorded this very special 29th Antiquiet session, featuring songs from the few 7″ singles they’ve released so far, and some other ones, unreleased in any form until today:
We know you know pedigree rock n’ roll when you hear it, so we’re just happy and honored to be a small part of the transaction. We can all keep tabs on this exciting new band through deadheavens.com and/or Facebook.
